Hummus is one of my favourite dip sauces. Its creamy and smooth texture with lovely nutty flavour of tahini and touch of garlic and lemon, make it a perfect dip to enjoy with anything you like. I personally love to eat it with cucumbers and chips. Hummus is not only delicious but very healthy too. It is full of protein as it has chickpeas as its main ingredient. Sesame seeds are also a good source of protein. Good fat content of olive oil and sesame seeds is also there along with benefits of lemon and garlic. Overall is a nutritious dip which you can enjoy without any guilt.

Another good thing about hummus is that it is totally vegan. If you don’t know what actually hummus is then let me tell you that it is a very famous dip or sauce commonly eaten in Middle East. It is made with chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), garlic, lemon juice, and spices. I first heard about it from my brother who lives in Abu Dhabi (UAE) and felt little awkward thinking how chickpeas taste like as a paste. But when I made it and tasted it, I fell in love with it. It is mostly available in grocery stores in jars but I recommend homemade hummus because it is always better.

Chickpeas: I am using canned chickpeas but you can use home cooked chickpeas as well. Just soak them overnight and boil next day. Add a little baking soda while soaking, this will make your chickpeas softer. One tip for creamier and smoother hummus is that you remove skin of chickpeas after boiling them.

Tahini: tahini is simply sesame paste which can be made easily at home. Although you can buy readymade from market for your convenience, but I make it at home. Homemade ingredients are always the best. Some people don’t like its flavor and use peanut butter instead of it. hummus tastes delicious both ways.

Lemon: it gives beautiful tangy flavor to hummus but don’t use extra amount of lemon juice. One lemon consisting of 1-2 tablespoon lemon is enough.

Garlic: garlic is true game changer in hummus. Couple of cloves of garlic give big change in its taste. Make sure you don’t miss this important ingredient. You can also give a twist to your hummus by adding roasted garlic in it.

Spices: you can add paprika, cumin powder, parsley, and salt to complete spice content of hummus. You can add quantity of these spices according to your taste.

Olive oil: main ingredient without which hummus is incomplete is olive oil. I am using of extra virgin olive oil because it gives better flavour.

How we can serve hummus?

As you know hummus is a dip sauce which can also be used as spread. You can serve it with pita bread, dinner rolls, salad, nachos, or chips. You can also make very delicious hummus rolls by spreading it on tortilla and add salad and meat. You can enjoy it alone as well with spoon. Hummus tastes amazing with fresh olives and garlic bread.
