 Dalgona coffee hit the internet by storm and got viral everywhere in no time. This coffee became famous after a Korean actor uploaded a video on Tik Tok in which he ordered whipped coffee at a restaurant and resembled the taste of coffee to dalgona (a famous Smokey caramel taste candy). As a coffee lover, I also tried dalgona coffee and almost addicted to it. I thought to turn this viral coffee into some dessert. So, I decided to incorporate it into moist cake. Dalgona coffee cake recipe has layers of creamy, smooth coffee frosting in between fresh chocolate coffee sponge.

Making dalgona coffee frosting is pretty simple. First step is to prepare coffee paste. I whipped the cream and mix this coffee paste in it. We can also make cream cheese frosting. I added some extra sugar in my frosting to balance the bitterness of coffee. In making dessert out of coffee, make sure to keep coffee flavor on lighter and sweeter side. I made simple chocolate sponge cake with a little favor of coffee in it, moist it with warm milk, and added frosting in between and top of the cake. You can also top your sheet cake and cup cake with this dalgona coffee frosting.

What dalgona coffee actually is?                                                             

Dalgona coffee recipe is basically whipped coffee having thick creamy texture and butterscotch color. It is made by whipping equal parts of sugar and coffee with adding small amount of water. We whip ingredients until we get thick paste. This paste is then mixed in hot or cold milk. It is similar to beaten milk coffee famous in India and Pakistan. Only difference is that in beaten coffee we first add coffee paste and then add hot milk and mix. In dalgona coffee we add coffee paste on the top of hot or cold milk.

Name ‘dalgona’ of this coffee comes from viral video by Korean actor. Just because this coffee has resemblance to dalgona candy, he named it so. It is fluffy and frothy. Because sugar is a part of whipping, this coffee is sweet too.

Few tips for making best dalgona coffee cake

  • It’s very important to keep your sponge cake moist. You can moist it with plain warm milk or dalgona coffee. Wait for some time until sponge absorbs liquid before applying frosting.
  • Make dalgona coffee paste with powdered sugar.  Coffee paste will not be smooth and creamy if you use granulated sugar. Add little water gradually with tablespoon. If you add even a small amount of extra water, you will not be able to get stiff coffee paste.
  • Before applying frosting, let the sponge cool down completely. Apply frosting evenly in the middle and don’t overfill your cake with frosting.

  • Baking oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Round cake pan

Ingredients

For cake preparation

  • 1 cup All purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp Coco powder
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • ½ cup Butter Melted
  • 1 cup Sugar Grinned
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tbsp Instant coffee Dissolve in hot water
  • 2-3 drops Vanilla essence
  • ¼ cup Milk

For frosting preparation

  • 200 ml Whipping cream
  • 3 tbsp Instant coffee
  • 1 cup Sugar Grinned
  • 2 tbsp Water

Instructions

  • Add melted butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until fluffy
  • Add oil and beat.
  • Dissolve instant coffee in water and mix in cake batter.
  • Add vanilla essence,
  • Mix three eggs in cake batter but add them one by one
  • Fold all purpose flour in batter.
  • Add coco powder and fold.
  • Fold in baking powder.
  • Pour the cake batter in pan and bake for 40 minutes at 180 degree centigrade.
  • Moist the cake with milk.
  • Beat coffee, water, and sugar together until you get thick paste.
  • Beat cream with 2 tbsp of sugar.
  • Mix coffee paste in cream.
  • Apply frosting in between and on the top of cake.
  • Decorate cake with pieces of chocolate.
