Butter cookies recipe is not only easy but also so much fun. My both daughters fight for piping different shapes of these cookies and I also enjoy this activity with my daughters. Butter, sugar, egg, and flour are four basic ingredients that are required for this recipe. Firstly, you have to mix sugar and butter and then add egg and flour. I use some drops of vanilla essence because I love the combo of light vanilla butter scent. Some people use butter essence but I think smell of butter is already so over powering in these cookies that there is absolutely no need of using butter essence.

Which kind of butter is best for making butter cookies?

Well, I always recommend unsalted dairy butter for this recipe. Different brands of salted butter use different amount of salt and you cannot control the amount of salt in your recipe by using it. It is also very important that you use softened butter on room temperature, not melted because it makes a huge difference in your baking results.

What should be the consistency of butter cookies dough?

Butter cookies dough thick but softer than biscuits dough and it is hard to spread it with roller and take cookies out of it. you can only pipe cookies or make a roll of dough and cut cookies with knife. Best way to handle this dough easily is to refrigerate it before baking. When butter in dough gets cooled, it becomes hard and makes it easier for us to shape cookies. If you are piping cookies, then first pipe them and then refrigerate for 30 minutes. Refrigerating also help in retaining the shape of cookies while baking.

Some success tips:

  • Measuring everything correct is the key to success in baking. Make sure you are using right amount of butter, sugar, baking powder, and flour. Anything a little less or a little excess can ruin your recipe. it is better that you use measuring cups.
  • when your cookies are baked, leave them in switched off oven for 20 minutes with its door little open. It will make your cookies crispier.
  • Because cookie dough is thick use a piping tip with wider opening. In this way you can easily pipe your cookies. Start with adding small quantity of dough in piping bag. Pipe a cookie and check if it is easily piped. If you find it hard to pipe, then take out the dough and add some milk in it.
  • Do not forget to refrigerate your cookies for some time before baking. In this way butter will take more time in melting in oven and cookies will retain their shape.
