Summer season is on its way and oranges are going. I like oranges so much that I keep eating them till season ends. This time I thought to enjoy oranges in a different way and made delicious Chinese orange chicken with chili garlic rice. Orange chicken is one of the most famous Chinese dishes. It is basically crispy fried chicken mixed in sweet and tangy orange sauce. This sauce is a combination of so many beautiful flavors.

Orange chicken can be enjoyed alone but I have made chili garlic fried rice with it. These rice best complement this chicken and make it a complete meal. Sweet and sour chicken with savory and spicy rice makes heavenly combo. Now you don’t have to go to Chinese restaurant to enjoy this delicious feast. True secret behind the taste of this dish lies in its simple basic ingredients. Making this dish is so satisfying and satisfying. Just grab the ingredients already present in your kitchen and start cooking.

Ingredients for orange chicken with chili garlic rice:

Chicken: boneless chicken of thigh portion is best for this recipe. Make one inch cubes of chicken. You can also use boneless breast but it will give dry texture after frying.

All purpose flour: for coating of chicken all purpose flour is used. I have mixed corn flour also to make coating extra crispy.

Egg: to make your chicken crispy and fluffy add an egg in coating.

Water: use water to prepare batter. Add water in flour mixture until you get consistency which is not too runny.

Orange juice: freshly squeezed orange juice gives best flavor to your dish. I like chunky texture in sauce that’s why I am using fresh juice with its pulp.

Garlic: it is one of main ingredient in both orange chicken sauce and rice. For sauce I used garlic paste and for rice chopped garlic.

Green chilies: I added chopped green chilies in rice for spice, flavor, and color.

Ginger: paste of ginger is very important for authentic orange chicken sauce. Its flavor is incomplete without ginger.

Sugar: I am using both white sugar and brown sugar in sauce. To give signature sweet flavor it is important to use brown sugar with white one.

Coriander and lemon juice: adding fresh coriander in rice give it beautiful color and freshness. Lemon juice saves your rice from becoming sticky.

Vinegar and soy sauce: to enhance the tangy citrus aroma and flavor both vinegar and soy sauce is used.

Can I bake chicken instead of frying?

If you are strictly on diet and want to bake chicken or air fry it, I recommend that you bake it without coating. In both air fryer and oven, coating melts down and you will not get desired results. For making authentic crispy orange chicken, you have to deep fry it.

Ingredients

For orange chicken

  • 300 gm boneless thighs cut in 1 inch cube
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp corn flour
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 and ½ tbsp chicken powder
  • 1 glass water or as reuired
  • 2 cups oil
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp vinegar
  • 3 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ cup corn flour slurry mix 1 tbsp of corn flour in ½ cup water
  • 1 and ½ tsp chili flakes

For chili garlic rice

  • ½ kg basmati rice
  • ½ cup chopped garlic
  • ½ cup chopped green chilies
  • 1 cup chopped coriander
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • cut chicken thighs into one inch cube.
  • in a bowl add all purpose flour and corn flour.
  • mix in salt, black pepper, and chicken powder.
  • add one egg.
  • add water into mixture until you get thick consistency.
  • mix chicken in batter, cover bowl with cling foil and marinate for 30 minutes.
  • soak rice in water for 20 minutes.
  • in a wok take water for boiling rice. add salt and oil in water.
  • when water starts boiling, add soaked rice. when rice are boiled stain them and drain extra water.
  • in wok heat oil and add chopped garlic. fry garlic until golden.
  • add chopped green chilies.
  • now add boiled rice and mix.
  • add coriander and mix.
  • add lemon juice and give a good final mix to rice.
  • place lid and let rice simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Fry marinated chicken until golden and crispy.
  • in a pan heat 4 tbsp oil and add red chili flakes. Fry them for few seconds.
  • add ginger and garlic paste.
  • add orange juice and mix .
  • add vinegar and soy sauce.
  • add white and brown sugar and a pinch of salt. wait until sugar is fully melted in sauce.
  • mix cornflour slurry to thicken the sauce.
  • mix fried chicken in sauce.
  • add 2 tbsp of sesame oil (optional)
  • serve with rice.
