History of mojito

Mojito is traditionally a combination of five ingredients: white rum, sugar (mostly sugarcane juice), lime juice, mint and soda water. It is originated in Havana, Cuba, though its exact origin is still debatable. Mojito is one of the most famous Cuban highball. To prepare mojito, fresh mint leaves are added in sugar syrup and lime juice. Mixture is muddled gently. Mint leaves are crushed just to release their flavor and they should not be shredded. Then rum is added in the mixture to lift mint leaves up. Finally, ice cubes and sparkling soda water is added, and drink is served with slices of lime in it.

A theory behind the name “ mojito” holds  that this name is derived from word “mojo” which is a Cuban seasoning made with lime. Another theory says that it is derived from Spanish word “mojadito” which means a little wet. Historically it is said that some South American Indians went to Cuban shore and gathered ingredients to make medicine for tropical illnesses. These ingredients were rum made from sugarcane, lime and mint. Some historians claim that African slaves working in sugarcane field in 19th century made cocktail first. But originally it did not contain lime juice.
